Our Biomass Boiler
Apart from the fact that landfill sites are an eyesore in many areas of the UK, there are many health and pollution risks associated with them. They produce and emit greenhouse gasses which are damaging to the planet and our health, as well as other impacts. Reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill is hugely important for everyone, especially as we move towards a greener future. At 1st Choice Waste Management, we have a state of the art biomass boiler to ensure that as much waste as possible is converted to electricity which gets fed back into the grid, reducing the need for landfill sites. Our biomass boiler creates energy from natural waste which reduces our carbon footprint and returns clean electricity back to the “grid”. Any wood and natural waste brought to our recycling centre are dried to produce a biofuel that is suitable for burning in our biomass boiler. When biofuel is burned, C02 is released into the atmosphere, some of which is good and needed. Biomass energy is classed as carbon neutral electricity generated by burning natural material. At 1st Choice Waste, we can create wood chippings from waste wood, fallen trees and forest debris and use our biomass boiler to convert it into naturally sourced electricity.
Our facilities include all the professional equipment needed to process your waste. This includes a weighbridge to ensure we have an accurate measure and volume of your commercial waste. Using a weighbridge facility ensures that there are no hidden costs associated with your waste. The accurate measurement of your waste ensures that all of your waste requirements are met at fair and highly competitive prices. If you become a client with us, you can access our online site waste management system 24/7 and this allows you to view your own waste reports, copy invoices and much more. Our high-level reports give you a summary of your business waste and we can then tailor them to your requirements to give you the detail you need. Whether you’re looking to dispose of general waste, confidential waste, hazardous waste or any other type of waste 1st Choice Waste Management can help.
Waste Management FAQs
After learning about our services, many businesses have questions about waste which include:
How does recycling affect my business?
If you recycle your business waste with a professional and established waste management company that offers a waste brokerage service you can eliminate some of the costs of your waste disposal with the money you earn back from your waste. 1st Choice Waste Management will work with you to establish efficient and environmentally friendly waste management and a brokerage programme that is bespoke to your business and its waste management needs. We recycle everything we can at our recycling centre and we are experts at sorting and making the most of your waste.
Why should my business recycle?
Every business should be recycling and working towards reducing the waste they produce. In June 2019, parliament passed legislation requiring the government to reduce the UK’s net emissions of greenhouse gases by 100% by 2050 which would make the UK a ‘net zero’ emitter.
By recycling, you are preventing waste from being dumped in landfill and minimising the number of carbon emissions that are being released into the atmosphere. When waste goes into landfill it combusts and releases dangerous gases into the atmosphere (greenhouse gases). There are many other drastic disadvantages to landfill and you can find out more here: https://1stchoicewastegroup.co.uk/10-reasons-why-we-should-recycle/
What are some good waste management tips?
Start by reviewing your waste, what does your business churn out in regards to physical, chemical and gas waste and by knowing this you can work out a strategy to reduce it.
Using the 4 R’s of waste is a great waste management theory, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. 1st Choice Waste Management are experts in commercial and business waste management solutions and we can support you in minimising your businesses carbon footprint by reducing the amount of waste you produce, re-using and recycling as well as recovering waste all of which include our biomass boiler.
How can my business produce less waste?
Understanding the waste you produce is critical, how much and what you produce so you are able to look at different ways in which it can be reduced. Setting your business waste reduction targets will be key to your success as well as putting a cost against your waste management and how much you will save by reducing, re-using, recycling and recovering.
What can my business do to help the environment?
Your business can help the environment by having a waste reduction strategy that works towards the UK target of being carbon neutral by 2050. Every step you take to reduce your non-recyclable waste protects our wildlife, rivers, stream, sea, natural habitats, and greenhouse gas emissions which results in global warming.
How can I make my business greener and more eco-friendly?
Operating a green business is instrumental in creating and leading positive change. Notwithstanding the positive impact on the environment, being green is also good for your profitability and your brand. Adhering to the 4 Rs of Waste Hierarchy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover), and conserving resources will save your business money in the long-run.
Recycling and composting are two of the best methods of waste management as they allow waste to be reused for different and effective purposes. Whether you use a domestic recycling service provided by your council or you take your recyclable waste to a public recycling centre, most domestic waste can be recycled, from paper, glass and plastic to waste food, even soft plastic can now be recycled. Using a responsible commercial waste management company service like 1st Choice Waste will ensure your business waste is reduced, recycled and recovered and less will goes to landfill. Another way of becoming greener is to reduce the materials you order and use saving you money in purchasing as well as disposal costs.
If you are concerned about the amount of waste your business is producing, here are some practical ways to help your business reduce its waste:
Know what your waste is – you can establish the types and quantities of waste your business produces by doing something very simple. Talk to your teams about waste, its impact and how as a business you want to be greener and protect the environment, ask them what they can do to reduce waste within your business. Introduce different recycling bins for different types of waste and this will tell you how much of your waste can be recycled and how much is going to landfill.
Our 1st Choice Waste weighbridge ensures that you never pay more for your waste disposal than necessary and our waste brokerage service means you can make money back from the waste your business produces. We commit to working with you to establish a simple and effective waste management programme and one that will consistently improve your waste credentials.
Introduce a waste reduction program – Once you have established the type and amount of waste you are producing this is a brilliant starting point. You can then use your starting point to set yourself business targets to reduce. Staff engagement is crucial to this so communication of where you are, where you want to be and how well you are doing will get your teams to buy in to reducing your business waste output.
Appoint a waste management coordinator for your business as well as waste management leads within your different business areas. They will all support and champion a reduction in the waste you are producing as well as the amount which goes to landfill.
Review your products – this is where many businesses can make big savings. Does the cost of disposing of materials outweigh the cost of producing or buying them? Could your business use fewer materials in packaging or reuse or recycle them? All of these factors will have a huge impact on how green your business is and will also encourage other businesses to work with you.
Only buy green goods yourself – talk to your suppliers about your green focus and targets, and how you are working towards only using environmentally friendly products or materials. Ask them what their green credentials are and how they can support you with this. Buying recyclable and eco-friendly products are often the same price but better for the environment and easier to dispose of as part of your waste management service.
Using green and environmentally friendly waste management companies – Only use a green waste disposal service like 1st Choice Waste management solutions whose priority and focus is to recycle as much waste as they can, minimising landfill waste. Again this will add to your green credentials and have a positive impact on your brand.
What is the Waste Hierarchy? The waste hierarchy passed as English law in 2011 through the waste regulations (England and Wales). The Waste Hierarchy Regulation states that all businesses who import, produce, collect, transport, recover or dispose of waste should follow the waste hierarchy. It is also relevant when waste is being transferred from one business or person to another as well as waste management companies.
The “waste hierarchy” ranks waste management options depending on what is best for the environment. The top priority is for waste producers to prevent waste in the first place and if this is not possible the next priorities have the following order; preparing it for re-use, recycling, recovery, and last of all and as a last resort responsible disposal into landfill.
As of the 1st of January 2015, all businesses must separate all their waste into metal, plastic, glass, paper and cardboard and this ensures the wastes can be collected and managed appropriately. The Waste Regulations state, waste producers must disclose on their waste transfer Notes and Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes that they have used all reasonable procedures and ways to meet the Waste Hierarchy.
Although the waste hierarchy came into effect in 2015 and it is a legal requirement many businesses continue to dispose of their waste into landfill and only use some recycling options rather than using the whole waste hierarchy of:
Prevention has the lowest environmental, social, and economic impact hence why it is the first priority. The Waste Hierarchy’s purpose is to stop (prevent) businesses and operations from creating waste in the first place. This should be through improved processes, practices, design as well as only using suppliers who have fully committed to the waste hierarchy.
Re-use is when a waste product or substance can be reused without any further processing, including checking, cleaning or repair. So many materials can be re-used including; pieces of furniture, machinery, product packaging, containers, paper, printer cartridges and much more.
Recycling materials that would otherwise be disposed of in landfill and turning them into new products. Recycling includes using a product for another purpose which can include furniture, product parts, glass, iron, aluminium, petroleum, paper, wood, natural materials and much more.
Recovery is waste reprocessed to make products, materials or substances including converting or recovering natural materials in a biomass boiler into electricity. There are many materials that contain significant embedded energy that can be recovered after processing.
The last option of the Waste Hierarchy is the disposal of waste into landfill. Landfill waste takes hundreds, if not thousands of years to break down if at all, creating and emitting harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as it does so. Landfill sites also leak harmful waste into the soil and waterways which damages and kills wildlife as well as getting into our food system.
